With the Letterman Superbowl commercial fresh in my mind, and the LACK of a commercial
from Toyota a question came to me: Could Toyota learn something from David Letterman? I
believe the answer is yes.
What Toyota can learn from David Letterman is very simple: Admit problem, divulge all
the dirt publically and quickly, so you can move forward.
Toyota has failed to do so.
In late January Toyota announced a major recall affecting 8 popular models due to brake pedal
problems. They did eventually appologize, and I even heard dealership owners going on local
radio shows appologizing saying they will take steps to make sure this "never happens again".
Fast forward a week and we find out that the United States government had to force them to do the recall
as this was a known issue as they were not acting fast enough.
Now, 2 weeks later, just this evening, we find out about a global recall of various Prius models
due to a simliar type problem. Again, they knew about the issue earlier but did not just step up and tell
us then. Now they look even MORE pathetic.
Yes, as sad as it sounds, Toyota actually can learn something from David Letterman.
Except the pain of the truth so that you can regain the trust and support of
those who liked you before.
Sorry Toyota, you failed on all fronts.
