I've noted a trend on
Google trends over the last few months and that is the fact that early on
they seemed to be very careful about not letting what I might describe as "adult" queries to show
up in the list for fear of potentially offending anyone. Those days seem to be over.
They seem to be embracing the fact that users LOVE gossip, and scandal.
Take for example the top July 9th Google trends terms. The #1 searched on trending term?
Oprah Hates Disabled People
Say wha? That's right! Oprah hates disabled people managed to make the top spot on Google trends.
According to the
disabled-world.com website, the
origins of this trend come from the fact some people think that during Oprah's audition contest for a
upcoming show called "Your OWN Show” she may have tampered with votes, specific allegations say that in a matter
of minutes, the leading vote getter, Zach Anner, a young man with
cerebral palsy, suddenly lost his
million plus vote lead. Insert conspiracy theory that Oprah hates disabled people and rigged some click and vote
bots to dump him into second place.
Now I have no idea if this is true. No one else seems to have any solid proof though "people" say they saw
the young mans counter actually go backwards.
Either way, Oprah seems in desperate need of some GOOD news in her domain these days. Her school was rocked
by scandal, she potentially doctored a contest, and she's had to resort to using pictures of her magazine that were taken
when she actually WAS skinny. (Ok, I sorta made up that last one but come on...photoshop city!)
