Do you use the social connection site Twitter, or any other public connection site? Then you should take a moment and
remind yourself that bad people exist, and it is going to be up to you to use common sense and protect yourself.
Below you will find a list of some basic no no's when making posts on public sites and boards like Twitter.
Dont give out your location:
Unless your sending a private tweet to a friend, it is not a particularly good idea to send out your location. If, God
forbid, you have a stalker, they could utilize this to follow you around. Creep out city! As a real
life lesson...lets look at NBA star
Shaq tweeting where he was eating and a couple of people who happen to actually be in the area and on twitter at the
time of the tweet, managed to get down to the restaurant while he was still there. You can read the story and see the pics of the guys WITH
Shaq
here. For 99.99% of people knowing
your location is not big deal, it's that 0.01 freak fest you have to watch out for.
In Space, no one can hear you scream
Well, actually in cyberspace, you cant "hear" the fact that 13 year old kid your tweeting with who happens to love everything YOU do, happens to be
a really lonely 36 year old dude who lives in his moms basement and wants to meet f2f because your just so cool. If you dont
understand what I'm talking about, watch an episode of
To Catch A Predator on
Dateline NBC...you'll figure it out what I'm talking about here.
Save your job, dont be a twit
You have finally landing a shot at your dream job. Your in like flin. You got the skills, you skipped the poppy seed muffins for a
month so you passed the
drug test. They loved you. But then they fired up
Google or put a
Dogpile down on
your butt and found your old Twitter account and all the nasty things you wrote. OOPS! Do not pass go, do not get job. In short, a safe approach is
pretend your mother is behind you reading what your typing. Keep it nice, keep it safe.
A happy tweet, is a safe tweet.
