Has the internet replaced the "for a good time call" messages left in bathroom stalls?
If your old enough you can remember all the
graffiti that used to litter public and school bathroom stalls. You remember
what i'm talking about, those "for a good time call" pranks scribbles where girls who REALLY hated other girls wrote the
others phone number on a stall, or a guy who's girlfriend broke up with them and he was seeking some sort of sicko revenge. But
like the newspaper industry which has been getting replaced by the internet information delivery mechanism, so it appears
is the "
for a good time call" messages.
Initially there seemed to be a movement of people who were listing such things in the free online classifieds
craigslist but
under a great deal of pressure they
closed their erotic services
posting section. They have since re-established a section called "adult" which they will more closely monitor, apparently. Guess there
was too much traffic/revenue to be had for such things.
At any rate, the movement now seems to be swithing over to social networks, especially the popular
twitter service. More and more "following" notices
emails appear to be coming from adult hookup, dating, friends with benefits types of services. In addition, if you look through the
public stream you can see a great deal of bashing going on towards indiviuals, and businesses.
This brings an interesting problem into play, most especailly for businesses. A person, who is a competitor of a business, can very easily
go into such a service and post negative comments which we know are picked up as content as part of Google and other search engines. It can
be difficult to "offset" such comments especially if they are done by someone who has a site/page that has some authority.
The only question now that remains is what will be the next thing that gets replaced by the Internet? Newspapers and music delivery
certainly have been re-invented. Shopping in general certainly has. What do YOU think will be the next part of the puzzle to fall?
