According to reports, Google property
YouTube.com is going to lose $470
million dollars this year because most ad spots are going unsold, even though according to
compete.com it
is the #7th most popular web site on the internet.
There is also a lot of speculation right now that Google is showing interest in the social site
twitter.
Does the fact they cant make money on the 7th most popular site that they should NOT go after twitter which
is currently the 140th most popular site? Does all thats Google does not gwitter?
Has Google itself become that which it fought so hard against with Microsoft: A monopoly?
Regardless of how you feel about Google, I do have a solution for their video revenue stream.
Almost every major news site that I visit has news video on demand for some of their stories. And almost
everyone one of THOSE plays an ad before the video you selected runs. Google should simply follow suit.
These ads may not perform as well from a click through perspect, but they are more brand recognition / brand building
in nature. McDonalds. Insurance companies. Products that you will buy in a store tomorrow or next week and the "reminder"
advertising might help push you towards their product. Harder to track no doubt, but advertising that
lots of companies do in a very big way. Just look at all of the drink companies...beer, pop. Do the commerials
make people run out and BUY the product right then and there? Maybe a tiny percentage. But the majority of the
spend is simple
brand building, recognition, and recall at the time of a purchase.
In other google news, a BBC
article mentions a focus of the
mobile unit of Google is voice search. This does not really float my boat but mobile phones have never been my
big thing. I HAVE a mobile phone but rarely is it even on. The only reason I like them is the idea that I can one day
cancel my physical land line into my house savings me a few bucks. Beyond that I think they are an anchor.
If you would like to get tweets when I update the site with new blogs postings and updated wallpapers for your iPod and iPhone
devices you cant following me on twitter
