Passengers of the Sapphire Princess cruise ship and the authorities at the port of Vancouver have a whale
of a tale after they discovered a dead
fin whale stuck
to the bow of the ship.
According to this
bbc news report
the last time this happened was 10 years ago as there are strict whale avoidance policies in place
so just this sort of thing does not happen.
Perhaps the scary part is the fact that the captain and crew had no idea it had even picked up the
unexpected passanger leaving some to believe it was not so much a whale strike but more of a
picking up the body of an already dead whale. The fin whale has since been wedged off the cruise
ship using two tug boats and moved to a barge.
Yes sir, those passengers definately have a whale of a tale to tell their friends back home.
This
site has a great
interactive page that has a google image map photo of the port of vancouver, and interactive toggles
of photos, etc.
I have personally really wanted to take a
cruise to alaska for all the great photo opportunities AND to
see a whale in the wild, but I certainly would not like to see one this way! Stupid I suppose. I live in
the pacific NW and I could easily go whale site seeing out on the waters here. Hmmm, I might just
have to go do that!
