I fully admit in my youth I used to spend a lot of time on
AOL, specifically in chat rooms. I actually
met a number of people that at the time I called friends. We would meet f2f as a group and we all became
fast and furious friends. There were other people I would only I.M. with who I probably would have also called
friend, as I started to care about how their day went, etc. As with most things...time passes, you get older, and you
move onto other things. I got over my online/chat addiction and rejoined the real world after probably a year. I just
got burned out and realized there were a LOT Of fake people online.
Now here we are some 15+ years later and
social networks have grown up. Or HAVE they?
I was boucning around on my
flickr account where I post pictures only of objects, never of family, etc. Too many freaks out there. But I have
started to notice a trend in a lot of the member accounts that I frequent because I like their photographs. In the comments
area you start to get a feel for people. And might I just say there appears to be a LOT of self loathing people who clearly
suffer from depression and other things.
It seems at least a portion of the youth who have come on to these types of sites are there to almost reach out/scream for
some sort of attention/ego boosting. I almost feel sorry for a lot of the people on there.
Don't think this is real? There was some teen that just killed herself because one of her so called "online friends" suddenly dumped her
because she heard she was not nice to her friends. As it turns out...the "friend" was the mother of a girl whom this girl had had an argument
with just down the street.
So sad.
