I
recently read that "The Thing" from 1982 with
Kurt Russell might be on the block for a re-make. While the movie did not
do well with it's original release to theaters, it has gathered a cult following and does well in the DVD market.
I would offer up to hollywood that this is not the way to go. Instead of a re-make, how about a sequel?
Think about it. Two of the main characters were alive at the end of the film. This being
Kurt Russell (R.J. MacReady) and
Keith David's (Childs) characters. In addition, at the end of the movie we see MacReady kill only ONE large "thing", yet if
you will recall, just before this there is a scene were we see two human shaped "things". There are
Wilford Brimley (Dr. Blair)
and
Donald Moffat's (Gary) characters. The scene was Blair (a thing) with his hand stuck in Gary's face turning HIM into a thing.
A sequel where they fast forward some 25 years to 2007 with an older Kurt and Keith trying to escape the nightmare of what they
saw and went through. A government (2 actually) that are trying to cover up the whole "alien visitation" thing so they stick
these two back out into tim buck two where MacReady is an even bigger alcoholic. Then you throw in a "thing" that managed to
survivor the encounter, and it's out for revenge. I think hollywood could do something with it, and I'd love to see Kurt and Keith
revisit these roles.
