I thought it might be fun to put together my own little "best of the best" list. As my first stab into this arena I figured
I will go with a classic topic that lots of people have already done, the best movie car chases.
Unlike everyone else, however, I am going to stick with what I own in my own DVD collection. So right
off the bat I will mention I will not have the infamous chase scene with Steve McQueen in Bullitt. To be honest, I have never even SEEN this movie
though like most people I have heard about the car chase. I think I have seen perhaps 3 seconds of the footage from that movie due to an old hollywood movie review show I used to watch in my youth. (Side note: Damn I wish I could
remember the name of that show...the ending opening clip for the show had a up close shot of a tie fighter being shot at from Star Wars...ug, i'll had to dig online.)
So, without further chit chat let me start MY list of the best movie car chases. There are in no particular order. For one reason or another
I simply feel these movies have car chases in them that I think movie lovers would enjoy. And just to make it a bit more interesting, i'm actually going
to make this for all types of vehicles, not just cars.
The Island
The Island has a really nice chase scene involving the two main characters on a sort of hover bike being chased
by SUV's. At one point they end up on a trailer and let a bunch of vehicle axle's fall off and they rain havox on
the people chasing them.
Children of Men
The car chase I speak of is actually VERY short. It is the scene where all the main characters are in a car in the
woods and an obstacle is dropped into the road. They have to back out quickly and there is this quick little scene where
the door of the car is opened and the motorcycle chasing them just goes FLYING!
Tron
I give Tron a mention simply because at the time the light cycle scene was pretty kick ass.
Matrix Reloaded
There were a few moments during the highway speed chase that, specially when Trinity is on the motorcycle, that make you
catch your breath as she weaves through traffic. Probably the best part however is when one of the twins ghosts himself back into
the moving vehicle and he mentions they are getting aggrivated.
The Transporter
The car chase near the start as he assist the dork bank robbers has a few nice moments.
The Fifth Element
When Bruce decides to run from the police after the girl falls into his cab is fun to watch.
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
The forest speeder chase. They walked the route with a steady cam then sped up the footage to the point your
yelling "LOOK OUT FOR THAT TREE!"
The Bourne series
The Bourne Identity and Supremecy each have some nice car chases.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
I like the chase where they are in the mini-van tossing each other around while going over who each other REALLY is.
Heat
The car portion of the chase did not last all that long but it builds up to one of the better gun battles in the
open street I have seen.
Ronin
I'll mention Ronin...simply because most everyone else does! It does not stick out in my head but then again I
have not watched it in over a year so I might be missing something.
